Abandon the days of pining
                    for, “getting back to normal”,
this ain’t gonna be like a light switch

                    you turn on and off.

                    Things have irrevocably changed,

                    those temporary layoffs
                    have become permanent job losses;
welcome to the empire of retraining,
60% of small businesses have disappeared.

There won’t be any “family feud”
with the loss of over half of million
                    of our loved ones.

                    The malaise of our melancholia
will linger from our irreconcilable remorse
                    and atonement.

We will be caught in the “Stockdale Paradox”.

like the prisoner of war experience...
Admiral Stockdale observed that his fellow POWs
who fared well emotionally were the ones

who realized they could be living in captivity
                    for an exceedingly long time.
While those that were overly optimistic prisoners,
who pinned their hopes on being released, fell apart.

                    As we take the adage
                    from Heraclitus,

“No man ever steps in the same river twice,
for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
                    We are left
                    to join the hymnal
                    of Ol' man river,

Long ol' river keeps hearing dat song.
You an' me, we sweat an' strain,

Body all achin an' racked wid pain.
                    Tote dat barge!
                    Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk Tezozomoc, Los
                    An' you land in jail.
                                                                                                Angeles, United

The reality is, “normal” wasn’t working for many of us.
