ME DESVINCULO DEL MAR

I am freed from the burden of the sea
though I have lived near the sea
on two coasts. I am freed from the burden

of the dangerous waters. You are
              near, we live

in a house we love / I am
              freed from the sea's burden

from the beauty of the fierce living things
              that inhabit it

              freed from the dangerous water
from which once as a child I was rescued
              as I began, suddenly,

              to drown.
              Me desvinculo del mar.

The line in Spanish is from
                  César Vallejo: the
             translation, "I am freed from
the burden of the sea," is by
                    James Wright.
