JACK FOLEY

                                                                                         —Irish proverb
IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORST
AND THE WORST WAS WITH GOD

That old man is a leprechaun they say
They say he’s got a pot of magic gold
If you can catch him, you will have your sway
He disappears into the woods away
Saint Patrick drove the snakes out of this land
But who will drive out Patrick and his band
The Irish sing, the Irish drink and play
And ghosts are riding in the Irish wind.

Ghosts are riding in the Irish wind
Our lives are like the grasses in the field
Soon, very soon, the wind will have its way
Soon, very soon, we’ll watch the world unwind
And be the ghosts that ride the Irish wind.
Be the ghosts that ride the Irish wind.

The good people live in the mounds we see
Or else in a world right next to ours
Speak softly when you speak of the Sidhe *
Who are as beautiful as early flowers
Trouble they cause when they kill the cow
Trouble they cause when they steal the child

But they can be friends to the farmer man
And give him the blessing of the wild
Ghosts ride softly, and we shed tears
Our lives are like the grasses in the field
Soon, very soon, the wind will have its way
Soon, very soon, we’ll see the flood of years
And be the ghosts that ride the Irish wind.
Be the ghosts that ride the Irish wind.
